Toothache

The most common cause of a toothache is a cavity in the tooth. Cavities are formed by bacteria thriving on sugary or starchy foods that stick to the teeth or gums. These bacteria then produce acids that inflict damage on the teeth and gums, and when the damage reaches deep enough to touch a nerve ending, it can cause excruciating pain. Other than cavities, toothache can be caused by something as simple as a food particle caught between two teeth, or a filling that has come loose, a crack in a tooth, or even by a sinus problem. You would surely need to visit a dentist to find out the exact cause and take treatment, but in the meanwhile you could try some of the following tips for temporary relief.

Some of the following spices, mouthwashes and compresses can give you the much-needed relief from toothache:

  • Rub some clove oil directly on the affected tooth, it has remarkable bacteria-killing properties. The clove bud contains eugenol which is a good local anaesthetic, and will numb the area where you apply its oil. Initially it may hurt but soon it will provide relief from the toothache.
  • Chewing on whole cloves can have the same effect. Put one in your mouth and chew till it is soft and moistened, then hold it against the affected tooth for about half an hour. It will relieve your toothache.
  • Take some powdered ginger and cayenne pepper in a cup and add a few drops of water to make a paste out of it. Roll some cotton in the paste and place it on the tooth that pains. Make sure you hold it only against the tooth, and not the gums.
  • Rinse your mouth with a tincture of myrrh. Its astringent effects can relieve inflammation and kill bacteria, relieving toothache. Boil one teaspoon of powdered myrrh in 200 ml of water for 30 minutes, strain and let it cool. Then take a teaspoon of the solution and mix it in half a cup of water and rinse your mouth with it. Repeat five or six times a day. Make sure you don’t swallow the liquid.
  • Peppermint tea can have a numbing effect and thus relieve toothache, besides making for a good mouth freshener. Steep a spoonful of dried peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for 20 minutes, strain, let it cool, and swish it around in your mouth and then spit it out. No harm if you swallow it too. This can be repeated as often as you like, till you get relief from your toothache.
  • Put an ice cube in a plastic bag, wrap it in a thin cloth and hold it against the aching tooth for 15 minutes so that it numbs the nerves. Or else you may simply hold an ice pack on your cheek over the painful tooth till it gives you a soothing feeling.
  • Holding a warm, wet tea bag against the painful tooth may also give relief. Tea has astringent tannins, which can give you temporary relief from toothache by reducing swelling.
  • If you have broken a tooth, cover the affected area with some chewing gum, which will provide some relief till you reach a dentist.
