Sore Throat

A sore throat may be a result of many things including common viruses, some of which can even produce blisters in the mouth and throat. Breathing through the mouth resulting in dryness and soreness in the gullet, sinus drainage (post nasal drip) or a bacterial infection can also be responsible for a sore throat. A sore throat lasting for more than two weeks can be a sign of a serious illness, such as throat cancer or AIDS. But otherwise, over the counter pain-killers like ibuprofen or paracetamol can give you temporary relief. Other causes of a sore throat can be screaming too loudly, an impending cold, or even working in an extremely dry place. You could try some of the following home remedies like gargles, teas, or honey for quick relief.

The age-old gargling method

  • Nothing compares to the ancient salt-water gargling method for quick relief from a sore throat. The salt has an antiseptic effect and drains water out of the gullet’s mucus membranes, and helps in clearing the phlegm. Mix half a spoon of salt in a glass of warm water (as warm as you can tolerate), gargle and spit out. Repeat every hour, it should ease the condition.
  • Dissolve half a spoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of warm water and gargle, it should soothe the inflammation.
  • Mix 10-20 drops of Tabasco, which is a from of hot chilli and has anti-viral properties, in a glass of water and gargle. Don’t swallow the fluid, as it may cause discomfort in your stomach.

Honey therapy

  • Honey, which has anti-bacterial properties, is also an age-old method to treat a sore gullet. Mix 2-3 spoons in a cup of hot water and sip on it. It will reduce swelling and irritation.
  • Mix the juice of half a lemon in hot water and add two spoons of honey, and consume to relieve the pain.

Tea treatment

  • Horehound is a herb of the mint family, and a tea prepared from it reduces the swelling and inflammation in the gullet’s tissues. It also helps by thinning mucus so that it becomes easier for you to clear it out. Steep two teaspoons of the chopped herb in boiling water for 10 minutes, strain and drink. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid this.
  • Slippery elm contains mucilage which forms a coating in the lining of the gullet, thus easing its soreness. Steep two teaspoons of the inner bark in two cups of boiling water, strain and drink.
  • Elderberry is another herb which contains tannins and anti-bacterial essential oils that can ease the inflammation.

  • 1000 mg of vitamin C three times a day can be of great help regardless of whether the soreness is caused by a flu, cold or bacteria. The vitamin will boost your immune system and fight off the infection.
  • The echinacea herb’s anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties will speed up the healing of your sore throat. Take tablets or capsules as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Consume 600 mg of garlic in capsule form to help fight off the infection. Dried garlic has powerful anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and can heal your sore throat faster.
  • Sucking on a zinc lozenge every 3-4 hours can have remarkable effects on a sore gullet. But make sure not to use them for more than five days, as it can harm your immune system.
