Cardiovascular Health

Our heart and blood vessels together form the cardiovascular system. The heart pumps blood to the entire body in a systematic circulation. Blood containing oxygen and other nutrients is carried to various organs and tissues via blood vessels called arteries. Nutrients from this blood are passed on to the body cells and the blood in return absorbs the waste from these cells and travels back to the heart through the blood vessels called veins. This de-oxygenated blood goes to the lungs where it dumps carbon dioxide and absorbed oxygen to return back to the heart. Any kind of disturbance in this entire process causes cardiovascular health issues. Maintaining cardiovascular health is of utmost importance, as all the organs of our body are hugely dependent on this system for obtaining oxygen and other nutrients.

Major factors affecting cardiovascular health

  • High blood pressure
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • High levels of cholesterol
  • Lack of nutrition
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Smoking, alcoholism and substance abuse

Heart failure, coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, stroke, peripheral vascular disease are some of the most common cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular health issues are on a rise and that is because of our incorrect lifestyle. Hence, it is necessary to make some healthy changes in our lifestyle to boost our cardiovascular health and for overall well-being.

For a healthy cardiovascular system
The most important factor that ensures good cardiovascular health is eating the right food. Food that is rich in vitamins and fibres and has high nutritional value should be preferred over foods which are calorie rich and contain harmful fats and sugars.
Regular exercise not only helps us to remain in good shape but also ensures that the heart functions well. Say no to smoking, tobacco, alcohol abuse or any other substance abuse.
Our sedentary lifestyle is a grave issue, and the root cause of several illnesses. An active lifestyle boosts cardiovascular health; so try to remain as active as you can.
Another sure shot way to overall well-being is staying happy. Enjoy every moment in your life, take time to relax and get adequate sleep; all these will help you to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system. Alternative therapies like yoga, meditation, etc. can also prove to be very beneficial.
