Facts about Cancer

  • After heart diseases, cancer is the second most common cause of death in the world. So much so, that around 20,000 people in the world die of this disease every day. Number of deaths due to cancer is higher than the number of deaths due to other diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS combined together.
  • The most commonly diagnosed cancers among men are prostrate, lung and stomach, while in women the common ones are cancer of breast, ovary, oesophagus and cervix. The risk of breast cancer increases if someone in your family has been diagnosed with breast cancer.
  • The chances of a smoker developing lung cancer is 23 time higher than a non-smoker. Chewing tobacco, too, is one of the main reasons for development of oral cancer.
  • India is rated as one of the places with highest cases of cancer in the world. And, tobacco is the most common cause for cancer in around 40-50% men and 20% women. Although there are no specific preventive measures for cancer, one should quit alcohol and smoking, consume healthy diet and organic food, and exercise regularly.
